Major Fleet Expansion for Bangladesh Aviation Sector
The government of Bangladesh is set to sign a landmark $3.7 billion aircraft purchase agreement with Boeing to acquire 14 new aircraft for its national carrier, Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
According to official reports, the deal will be signed in Dhaka and marks the largest modernization initiative in the airline’s history, aimed at strengthening long-haul and regional connectivity.
Aircraft Details Under the Deal
Under the agreement, Biman Bangladesh Airlines will acquire:
- 8 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners
- 2 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners
- 4 Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft
This expansion will significantly upgrade the airline’s long-haul capacity and fuel efficiency.
Strategic Trade Link With the United States
The aircraft purchase is closely tied to a broader US–Bangladesh trade agreement, which aims to reduce tariff tensions and balance trade flows.
Bangladesh, a major global exporter of garments, has been working to address trade imbalances with the United States by increasing imports of American agricultural and industrial goods, including:

- Cotton
- Oil
The United States remains a key export destination, accounting for nearly 20% of Bangladesh’s ready-made garment exports.
Background of the Agreement
The deal was initially agreed in August 2025 under a caretaker administration that managed Bangladesh following political transition in 2024. A newly elected government in February later reviewed and continued the agreement as part of long-term aviation and trade strategy.
Bangladesh, a country of over 170 million people, is the world’s second-largest garment manufacturing hub and heavily relies on global trade stability.
